Proudly Made in Bhadohi — the Carpet City of India
Every Bhadohi Originals rug is hand-knotted or hand-tufted in Bhadohi, Uttar Pradesh — home to the largest hand-knotted carpet weaving cluster in the world, and the source of a weaving tradition that dates back to the 16th century Mughal era. Because we're based here, not just sourcing from here, you get authentic Bhadohi craftsmanship without the layers of middlemen markup that most rug retailers add.
Bhadohi Rugs vs. Mass-Produced & Machine-Made Rugs
Not all "handmade-style" rugs are actually handmade. Here's what sets a genuine, GI-certified Bhadohi rug apart from the machine-made and mass-imported rugs sold by most big-box and generic online retailers.
| Bhadohi Hand-Knotted Rugs | Typical Machine-Made / Mass-Imported Rugs | |
|---|---|---|
| Construction | Hand-knotted or hand-tufted by trained artisans, one rug at a time | Power-loomed in bulk, often thousands of identical pieces per run |
| Materials | Premium natural fibers — wool, silk, bamboo silk, cotton | Often synthetic fibers (polyester, polypropylene) for lower cost |
| Lifespan | 25+ years with proper care, often improves with age | Typically 3–5 years before fibers flatten, shed, or fray |
| Authenticity | GI-certified origin since 2010 — legally protected, verifiable provenance | No certification; "handmade look" achieved by machine texturing |
| Craft Continuity | Skills passed down through generations of the same weaving families | No artisan tradition — produced by automated looms |
| Uniqueness | Natural knot-by-knot variation — every rug is subtly one of a kind | Perfectly identical, mass-replicated patterns |
| Pricing | Bought direct from Bhadohi weaving units — no importer markup | Multiple import/distribution layers add cost without adding quality |

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between hand-knotted and hand-tufted rugs?
Hand-knotted rugs are woven knot by knot on a loom by a skilled artisan, a process that can take weeks to months per rug and typically lasts 25+ years. Hand-tufted rugs are made by punching yarn through a fabric backing with a tufting gun, which is faster to produce and more budget-friendly while still fully handmade. We sell only these two genuine handmade constructions.
Which is better for a rug, wool or silk?
Wool rugs are naturally durable, stain-resistant, and easy to live with, which makes them the better everyday choice for living rooms, hallways, and other high-traffic areas. Silk rugs have a finer sheen and more intricate detail, but are more delicate and best suited to low-traffic statement spaces like a formal room or bedroom. Both are available hand-knotted or hand-tufted.
How long does a rug from Bhadohi Originals last?
With proper care, a hand-knotted rug can last 25 years or more and often looks better with age. Hand-tufted rugs are more affordable and, with the same care, typically hold up well for 5-10 years of everyday use.
Do handmade wool and silk rugs shed?
Some initial shedding of loose fibers is normal on a new wool or silk rug and usually settles within the first few weeks of regular vacuuming. It doesn't affect the rug's quality or lifespan. Hand-knotted rugs typically shed less than hand-tufted rugs, since the pile is woven into the base rather than punched through a backing. Shedding that continues well beyond the first month isn't normal and our support team can help.
How do I clean and care for a handmade rug?
Vacuum regularly without a beater bar, rotate the rug every 6-12 months for even wear, and blot spills immediately rather than rubbing. For deep cleaning, we recommend a professional rug wash rather than a home carpet cleaner. Care instructions specific to your rug's material are included with every order.
How long does it take to make and dispatch my rug?
Every rug is made to order by hand, so production time depends on construction. Hand-tufted rugs typically take 2-3 weeks to weave and finish, while hand-knotted rugs take 1-2 months given the intricacy of knot-by-knot weaving. This dispatch timeline is the same whether your order ships within India or internationally. Only the transit time after dispatch changes based on where you're located.
Do you ship rugs internationally, outside India?
Yes, we ship both hand-knotted and hand-tufted rugs internationally to customers outside India. Production and dispatch time stays the same everywhere (2-3 weeks for hand-tufted, 1-2 months for hand-knotted), but transit time after dispatch depends on your destination country. Contact us at support@bhadohioriginals.com with your location for an exact international shipping estimate.
How long does delivery take within India?
Shipping calculated by weight at checkout. Once your rug is dispatched, most domestic deliveries within India arrive in 14 days or less depending on your pincode. Enter your pincode on any product page for an exact transit estimate before you buy.
Can I order a custom size or design?
Yes. Our Custom Rug Order tool lets you specify your own material, construction, size, and design notes, with a live price estimate and the same secure checkout as any other order, available for both domestic and international customers.
Are Bhadohi rugs GI-certified, and how do I know mine is genuinely handmade?
Yes. Every Bhadohi Originals rug is hand-knotted or hand-tufted in Bhadohi, Uttar Pradesh, home to a Geographical Indication (GI) tag since 2010 that legally certifies genuine handmade origin. Unlike machine-made rugs with a manufactured "handmade look," you'll see natural knot-by-knot variation in the pile, since no two handmade rugs are ever perfectly identical.
What if I need to return or exchange my rug?
Easy returns / exchange window. Reach out to us at support@bhadohioriginals.com or +91 93050 05596 and our team will take it from there.
