Handwoven in Bhadohi, India's Carpet City
Bhadohi Originals is based in Bhadohi, Uttar Pradesh, not just sourcing from here, but rooted here. Every rug we sell is hand-knotted or hand-tufted a few minutes from our own door, by artisans whose families have practiced this craft for generations.
400+ Years of Weaving History
Carpet weaving takes root in the Bhadohi-Mirzapur region during the reign of the Mughal Emperor Akbar, who is widely credited with encouraging Persian knotting techniques to flourish on Indian soil.
Mirzapur and Bhadohi become a haven for skilled weavers from across the subcontinent, and the region's carpet trade begins to organize into the industry recognized worldwide today.
Bhadohi's handcrafted carpets are awarded a Geographical Indication (GI) tag, legally certifying carpets from this belt, spanning nine districts including Bhadohi, Mirzapur, and Varanasi, as authentic, protecting both buyers and the artisans who make them.
Bhadohi is home to the largest hand-knotted carpet weaving cluster on earth, with over 3.2 million artisans across the region, and the craft is still passed down inside families, loom to loom, generation to generation.
What We Weave With
Wool
Premium, ethically-sourced wool forms the backbone of most Bhadohi rugs, resilient, naturally stain-resistant, and capable of holding a knot for decades without losing shape.
Silk & Bamboo Silk
Used for accent pieces and fine detailing, silk and bamboo silk catch the light differently than wool, giving heritage patterns a subtle sheen prized in luxury interiors.
Hand-Knotting
The most time-intensive construction. A single rug can take weeks to months, with every knot tied by hand on a traditional vertical loom.
Hand-Tufting
A faster construction that still relies entirely on skilled hand work, giving a softer price point without leaving the artisan tradition behind.
What Sets a Bhadohi Carpet Apart
- GI-certified authenticity. Since 2010, genuine Bhadohi carpets carry legal Geographical Indication protection, the same kind of certification that protects Champagne or Darjeeling tea, so you know exactly what you're buying and where it came from.
- Generational skill. Many of the artisans we work with learned to weave from a parent or grandparent, knowledge that doesn't transfer to a factory floor.
- Built to outlast trends. Hand-knotted construction on natural fibers means a well-cared-for rug can last 25+ years, often improving in character with age, unlike machine-made rugs designed for a 3-5 year lifespan.
- A genuine export leader, not a niche craft. The Bhadohi-Mirzapur belt already supplies well over half of India's handmade carpet exports, reaching the United States, Germany, Australia, Japan, the Middle East, and beyond. This is a global-scale industry with centuries of quality control behind it, not a boutique curiosity.
Why Buying Direct Matters
Most rugs sold by large retailers pass through several layers of importers and distributors before reaching a showroom, each one adding markup. Because Bhadohi Originals is based in Bhadohi itself, we buy directly from the weaving units we work with, which means fairer payment to artisans and a better price for you, without compromising on the authenticity of a real hand-knotted Bhadohi carpet.
